Copytrax Wins Worldwide Business with CD Laminator Technology Cambridge technology company Copytrax are celebrating the success of their Artcoater product, a machine that has been sold to CD and DVD duplicators worldwide. The Artcoater is an automated machine that provides digitally printed CD's and DVD's with a scratch proof gloss coat that enhances and protects the disc artwork. The Artcoater has proven to be a leader in its field and has recently been enhanced with a new smoother better curing varnish that provides CD's with an improved quality of finish.
"The Artcoater has been a great success," said Steve Woods, Managing Director. "More and more CD and DVDs are being printed using digital inkjet technology as it can be much faster, cheaper, better quality and easier than screen printing. However, the artwork on a digitally printed disk can be vulnerable to smudging and scratches, the Artcoater provides the essential finish for these digitally printed CD's and DVD's." The Artcoater is a stand-alone 250-disc robot that automatically loads and unloads each CD or DVD, with a cycle time of approx 30 seconds. Using UV (Ultra Violet) technology, a clear coating of approximately 3 microns is applied evenly over the printed surface of the disc resulting in 'instant-dry', which enables the operator to place the disc directly into a PVC wallet without sticking. Copytrax's 'Adjustable Coating Head Technology' allows the user to fine tune the process to achieve the desired finish from full gloss to satin depending on preference and disc surface type. Clean and virtually odourless, the Artcoater has been designed to be used in a printing and duplication environment. "Most of the time, these machines are shipped alongside our Picasso CD printing machines," said Steve Woods. Copytrax Project 37D CD Printer To Address Mid Volume CD and DVD Printing Market Pioneers in digital print technology, Copytrax, have announced the release of their Project 37D CD and DVD printer that has been designed to address the market for mid volume CD and DVD printing.
Mid volume CD production is currently undertaken using traditional silk-screen methods and often involves tooling and set up procedures. The new Project 37D is a fully automated machine that can handle print runs of up to 1000 CD's per hour whilst providing on-press proofing and photo-realistic image quality. The Project 37D is expected to open up the CD and DVD printing market to general printing companies looking to broaden their offering as well as traditional silk screen printing companies that are seeking to migrate to digital technology. “Within the print industry, there is definitely a shift from silk screen printing towards more modern digital print solutions,” said Steve Woods. “Digital print technology provides much more flexibility with regards print volumes and the handling of multiple versions of say a software package or DVD. In addition to this, there are no tooling requirements, no setting up or handling of films or screens and less labour. The whole process is controlled from a PC and is fast and very effective, making it, commercially, a very attractive technology for the competitive CD and DVD printing market.” The original Project 37 machine targeted the high volume industrial CD and DVD printing market whereas the new 37D has all the same attributes but has been scaled down to meet the needs of the medium volume production runs. The Project 37D is less expensive and takes up less room than the current Project 37 design but uses the same internal technology that provides high picture and text definition, a fully automated CD and DVD handling process and also provides each CD with a protective UV coating. “The 37D contains a lot of powerful technology and will offer CD printers the opportunity to improve both the quality of their print and also the level of service that they can offer their customers,” said Steve Woods. “Whether it's the ability of our colour matching software to ensure consistent print performance over large and fragmented print runs, or the fact that a job change can take only 10 seconds, or the fact that our inkjet control software can save up to 30% on ink costs, we feel sure that the Project 37D will further establish Copytrax as a leader in the development of technology for digital printing solutions.” For CD and DVD printers interested in exploring the benefits of moving to digital print technology, Copytrax hold regular demonstrations at their Cambridge based factory. Copytrax can also provide detailed cost analysis information that provides a valuable insight into the cost benefits of using digital print technology for industrial printing. Project 37 a new, revolutionary, digital single pass, uv cure inkjet cd/dvd printer Copytrax has launched a new UV inkjet CD and DVD printer designed specifically for the optical disc industry. The printer will enable optical disc decorators to handle short runs more effectively and economically as well as delivering the benefits of variable image capability disc to disc. that will free existing printers to do what they were designed for - fast long runs, said the company. Known as Project 37, the printer is the result of close collaboration between Sun Chemical and Copytrax Technologies, a manufacturer of printing and coating equipment for the professional CD and DVD duplicator market. Operating out of its headquarters in Cambridge (UK) Copytrax Technologies has been able to benefit from the worldwide centre of inkjet technology excellence in and around Cambridge, to develop an optical disc printer. Project 37 is controlled by proprietary software and incorporates a fixed inkjet array using 24 of Xaar's Omnidot 318 piezoelectric, drop-on-demand, multi-pulse greyscale heads, which are said to ensure photo-quality resolution. The discs are presented using a linear motor driven carriage with robotic handling from input to output spindles. Copytrax said that Project 37 runs with a claimed average output of one disc every three seconds using specially formulated UV curing inks. As with most digital print processes, the printed image is not a replication of an imaged plate or screen, but a streamed digital file that can be changed from disc to disc. The possibility to print every disc uniquely creates opportunities for the industry in security and brand protection, promotional editions, mass customisations and novelty applications. It also makes on-press proofing economically feasible, added Copytrax. "Once printed and cured," said Steve Woods, Managing Director of Copytrax, "Sun's UV inkjet inks are as durable as screen or offset inks and unaffected by humidity or ambient conditions, and usually do not require any post processing, such as varnishing or laminating that other digital techniques require." Richard Martin, corporate vice president of Sun Chemical Screen, said: "Project 37 delivers to the optical disc industry the quality of digital printing on a commercial scale that has long been in demand. We believe it will transform the economics of short and medium run processing." "Just watching discs pass under the print heads and coming out fully cured in seconds, each with a different image, is amazing," said Steve Woods, Managing Director of Copytrax, "Project 37 represents an exciting step change in CD and DVD printing technology". Steve added that, "Through the partnership with Sun Chemical, we are confident we have a winning combination of their leading digital ink technology, together with our own market-leading engineering, which has resulted in a printer capable of taking the optical disc world by storm." Copytrax Promises Faster, Better and Cheaper CD and DVD Printing Leading developer of CD and DVD on-body printing technology, Copytrax, has announced the availability of a new 'colour management' technology that they say will enable CD and DVD duplication companies to increase profitability and provide better quality print on optical disc media. Whilst developing their Project 37 bulk CD and DVD printing machine, Copytrax has introduced a new technology that automatically calibrates the machine to take into account performance and colour variations due to the differing surface profiles of CD's and DVD's, inconsistencies in ink types and the variable performance of the actual print heads. This colour management technology is now available for their Picasso smaller batch machines, both as an upgrade to many Picasso machines that exist worldwide and also as a new feature to all future Picasso CD and DVD printing machines.
"The Copytrax Colour Controller product that we are rolling out is being very well received," said Steve Woods, Managing Director of Copytrax. "In the past, a kind of trial and error approach has been used to set up a machine for CD and DVD printing, to ensure the colours are correct and the overall quality is acceptable. Those involved in CD printing will know that this is very time consuming and very wasteful. The new technology completely automates this process, enabling far more time to be dedicated to profitable production and also offers a consistently higher quality of print." Copytrax claims that the new colour management technology also saves on ink costs, as the previous approach often led to 'over inking'. The new system enables the operator to use only the minimum ink required and has proven to save up to 20% on ink usage. "Another major benefit of the new colour management systems is that it will set an industry standard," said Steve Woods. "It will enable CD and DVD printers to produce consistent colour performance when printing a CD or DVD, especially when the CD or DVD production is spread across different machines and different geographical locations. In fact, the calibration data can be stored as a file, so that you can be sure that future print runs will also be an identical colour match." Copytrax are also celebrating the winning of a UK Research and Development Grant that will help fund enhancements to their Project 37 industrial CD and DVD printer. Although Copytrax are reluctant to disclose any information about this new project, it is understood that it will further enhance the commercial performance of the Project 37 machines and also address environmental issues relating to CD and DVD printing technologies. "We are really pleased with this Award," said Steve Woods. "We feel that this shows that Copytrax is valued for its role within the Cambridge Technology sector and acknowledges the effort and expertise that Copytrax invests in this field. We have some great ideas and this funding will help us put our ideas into action and enable us to launch certain technologies sooner than we had been expecting." Copytrax has been developing systems for digital media reproduction for 15 years and has distributors around the world. Their product range includes the Picasso CD and DVD digital printer that is ideal for small batch production, the Art Coater that provides a coating to enhance the visual quality of CD and DVD print and provide protection to the print from handling; and the powerful Project 37 bulk CD and DVD printing machine capable of printing 1200 CD's per hour. Copytrax Artcoater set to take on the US and Australia Copytrax have announced that they have agreed distribution, support and maintenance for their acclaimed 'Artcoater' UV coating technology in both the US and Australia. "We've been supplying this machine to companies around the world for several years now," said Steve Woods, Managing Director of Copytrax. "It's proven to be a great product and we are excited to have the opportunity to improve our international sales channels and enhance the services that we provide to our clients in the US and Australia."
Inkjet printed discs offer the benefits of full digital print 'Direct-to-disc-surface'. With this technique, the image resolution is extremely high, however water-based inks are at risk of smudging when exposed to moisture. The Artcoater was developed to address this concern and has enabled the production of low to medium volume, high quality on-body print for CD and DVD based products.
